Our Wedding: One Month Until Vegas

Holy Crap! We are getting married in one month. ONE MONTH! I am so excited, and yet it feels weird, too. I am going to be a wife in one month. I am so happy, though. I couldn’t have found a better man and I cannot wait to start our lives together as husband and wife.

So, just a quick check in on where we are at this stage.

At this point we have:

We Still Need:

  • A Cake
  • Mark’s Attire
  • Dinner Reservations
  • Everyone to RSVP :)
  • A Marriage license

It is a simple wedding, so that is actually about it, though I am sure I am forgetting one or two things.

But yea…one month! :)

And to celebrate, we are heading to Comic-Con. :)

I couldn’t be happier.

Travel on a Dime: Discovering Priceline

image

It is almost time for this year’s Comic Con. Before it’s impending arrival, I do promise a recap of last year’s awesome event, but today I need to talk about our Hotel…and our budgetary constraints.

As you have probably realized, Mark and I may have over reached ourselves this year, in terms of travel.

I mean, I’m thrilled. I love to travel, and see new places. I love to get out of Los Angeles and try new things. But financially, we are a bit strapped.

So far this year we have already taken an anniversary trip to Santa Barbara, taken a birthday trip to Anaheim for Wondercon, and taken a week off to go to Pennsylvania and plan our wedding.

Still to come, we are going to Las Vegas next month to get hitched, and I am going to Florida in October to help my friend get married.

That is a lot of travel, and the most we have ever traveled together in all of our years together. And while it is a trend that I hope will continue, I have discovered that I need to find ways to see the world on the cheap.

Just this year, I unveiled the magic of Priceline.com. The site has been around for ages, and I am not sure why I had always been gun-shy about checking out the discount site. Maybe I thought the whole, “name your own price” thing was a gimmick or maybe I was concerned about the security of my private information.

Either way, I am glad that I finally took the dive and checked out the site.

We tried the “name your own price” to book out hotel for our Santa Barbara Anniversary Trip (and LOVED it) and found a great deal on a two night stay in Anaheim for Wondercon as well.

The “name your own price” section was not as good to me for this year’s Comic Con, however.

It was our fault, really. We waited way to long to book a hotel (we only booked one two days ago). I stopped trying to “name my own price” when I couldn’t even find a one star hotel within ten miles of the Con that was at 140 per night.

That was more than we could afford…more than we had.

I searched through my email in desperation, just hoping to find a coupon from Priceline that could help lower the cost. It wasn’t until that moment that I noticed Priceline had emailed me a promotion they were running for the summer.

No need to bid, just type in the area you need to travel and the dates, and Priceline shows you five or six deals. Now, similar to name your own price, the website doesn’t show you the name of the hotel, just the general area and the star level of the hotels.

They had good deals on the Gaslamp Quarter (right by the Con), and Hotel Circle (which has a shuttle to the Con), but the prices were still too high.

However, the Old Town area had a promising price. $103 per night…which was by far the lowest I had seen thus far. I Googled Old Town, and saw that the center of that area was 7 miles from the Convention, which is totally manageable.

I called Mark at work to get his opinion, and we both agreed it was probably the best price we would get without waiting until the last minute and maybe not finding anything.

So we booked the place, and revealed the name and location where we would be staying. Nothing special, but we do get a pool and hot tub, which might be nice if we get back early Friday night.

And we are actually only 5 miles from the Convention Center, which is even better.

We are just thrilled to have a place to crash, and grateful to Priceline for making it all possible.

A Busy Tuesday

In stark contrast to yesterday’s lazy day, today I have a full list of things to do.

My morning started at 7:30. I climbed out of bed, got dressed, fed the cats and ran out the door. I had an appointment at Firestone at 8:00 am to get some work done on my car.

The gentleman at the shop told me it would be a while, so I walked up Highland to Hollywood Blvd and hit the gym.

I tried two new classes. I started with a class called Step plus Abs. It was a light impact step aerobics class with a big emphasis on ab work and core strengthening.

I enjoyed the class, and loved the instructors energy, but I have a feeling that I’m going to be fairly sore tomorrow. After that I checked out my first ever Yoga class. It was very peaceful, though I am not limber enough to do most of the stretches for long. Hopefully, that will come with time.

I knew the car would still be hours, so I headed home to start cleaning.

This was not your normal, run of the mill, cleaning. This was more like a spring cleaning.

I cleaned out closets, and busted out the tough chemicals and I am not even half way done. :( Though the bathroom looks pretty.

This is gonna be a project to get through the whole apartment.

But I am re-organizing and getting rid of stuff to make the place perfect for the wedding. :) I wanna come home (married) to a gorgeous, well organized home. I don’t know why. My friend Kelly suggested that it’s because it is a grown up thing to do, and being married feels grown up.

My car wasn’t ready until almost six. I jogged down to Firestone to pick up the car, since I didn’t do any cardio this morning at the gym.

After getting the car, and sitting through 20 minutes of traffic to go 2 miles (Hollywood blvd at rush hour is gross) I finally made it to the grocery store (Fresh and Easy is my favorite).

We had a coupon to save 10 bucks when we spent 50 and the fridge was seriously empty since we had just been out of town.

I spent 63 (which was 53 after the coupon) a was able to get enough food to last a couple weeks. I stocked up on veggies, chicken, salmon burgers, fruit, granola bars, and yogurt. Not too bad if I say so myself.

I whipped up dinner when I got home. Some sauteed chicken breast, brown rice and black beans. I snacked on it, but Mark and I are going out for a friends birthday tonight, so dinner is gonna have to hang out in the fridge until we get back.

Time for a much needed shower, and then I gotta go pick up Mark and head to the bash.

Goodnight!

Our Wedding: My Vegas Dress

Since the whole idea behind the Las Vegas wedding was easy and simple, I wanted a dress that would suit that concept.

I knew as soon as we booked the Vegas Venue that I had to find a dress. It would be too much pressure if I found one that needed to be altered or ordered, so I just jumped into the search.

I did not have fun dress shopping.

I spent an entire day off looking around the mall for any white or off white cocktail length dress.

It shouldn’t have been hard. It was, after all, prom season. But everything I found was too short, or too modern, or too trashy, or too ugly. I must have gone into every woman’s clothing store in the mall.

I even went across the street to another shopping plaza and did the same thing. Nothing.

I went to the web, my ultimate answer in times of shopping peril, but was thwarted again. Even with all of cyberspace at my fingertips, I could not find a suitable dress.

It was beyond frustrating. My simple Vegas wedding was not starting off well. Finding a cute cocktail dress during Prom season was not proving to be a simple task.

I chose to go another route and a couple weeks later, went with a friend to “David’s Bridal” after work. The bridal consultants were not very nice. Even though the store was dead, and I was only looking at simple destination dresses they seemed honestly annoyed that I had not made an appointment.

Um…really?

Maybe they were just miffed that my price point was so low, but I wasn’t planning to spend much on the simple dress I was envisioning.

I only found three dresses that I was even willing to try on (though she did only show me like 8 to choose from).

Dress number one was NOT impressive.

I liked the sweetheart neckline and had wanted something more unique on the skirt, but this dress missed the mark. It just looked cheap on the bottom and I wasn’t a fan of the type of bling the dress had.

Dress number 2 was better.

Again, the right neckline, and I liked the lace and length. I just didn’t feel any sort of emotional attachment to the dress. It was missing something, and it didn’t have that touch of playfulness I was looking for.

I really like dress number 3 despite the length.

I felt like a princess, which was certainly appropriate for our Las Vegas Wedding Venue. I could see it with flowers in my hair, walking down the isle. It was more money than I planned to spend, and being a full length skirt would make it difficult in Vegas. I had planned to just wear my dress all night running around town after the wedding, and this was too long for that. I could shorten it to cocktail length, but that would be an added expense as well.

I didn’t say no to the dress, and even made note of the design for future reference, but I didn’t feel comfortable making the purchase either.

I left the store feeling very disappointed. I wanted to make a choice quickly so I could focus on the other details. I was actually somewhat depressed and fairly cranky when I arrived home that night.

Lucky for me I have an incredibly understanding fiance who loves me dearly. He was so sweet to me, despite how upset I was, and reassured me that I still had plenty of time to find the perfect dress.

Though I knew my efforts would be futile I hopped online again, this time tweaking my search terms to (hopefully) find a larger selection of dresses.

I found a few likely options from a bunch of stores I had never heard of, and really didn’t want to take the chance.

In Google shopping I found a link to a white cocktail dress from Nordstrom and clicked on the thumbnail for a better look. I didn’t like it. Too rigid and mature. It wasn’t as whimsical or romantic as I wanted.

I was just about to give up for the day when I saw something on the bottom right side of the screen. It was in a column titled “You might also like” and was the second to the last dress.

I gasped.

I clicked on the thumbnail to enlarge the image, and I knew. This was my dress. The price confirmed it. Half off and it was far less than I could have ever hoped to spend.

I was so excited. It would need a few special touches to make it perfect but it was everything I wanted for myself.

I checked to be certain that I could return the dress for a full refund (in case it didn’t fir or didn’t look good on) and then I placed the order.

I’m not gonna lie, I was nervous about making such an important decision without having tried the dress on, but the return policy set me at ease.

I needn’t have worried. The next week the dress arrived.

It was exactly what I hoped it would be. It was exactly like the picture, and it fit perfectly.

I still need to get it pressed and I am hoping to find a lacy slip to wear underneath the dress, but aside from finding a few accessories, I am so pleased with my dress.

I am really looking forward to wearing it. :)

Our Wedding: Viva Las Vegas

So, I know what you’re thinking. “You just went to Pennsylvania to plan your wedding for next May 18th. So, what is all this Vegas nonsense?”

Well, I am very glad you asked. :)

When Mark proposed, he was really excited about the idea of getting married in one of our favorite cities.

The place holds some pretty fond memories for the two of us, and Mark always wanted a simple wedding anyway.

He also wanted to get married sooner, rather than later.

The fact that he wanted to get married in a castle may or may not have also played a teeny role in this decision.

So, we will be (officially) husband and wife on Monday, August 13th at around 4:00 pm. In case you didn’t guess, we will be tying the knot at The Excalibur!

This is a preliminary checklist of how things stand. I promise blog updates on each topic quickly (after all, I only have a month and a half).

Things We Already Have:

  • A Ceremony Location
  • An Officiant
  • Flowers
  • The Chapel Photographer
  • A Dinner Location (There will be no reception, just a small group of friends)
  • Invitations
  • My Dress
  • Our Wedding Bands
  • Hotel Reservations
  • Discounted Hotel Rates for Our Guests

What We Still Need:

  • Dinner Reservations
  • A Small Cake
  • Mark’s Attire
  • My Shoes
  • Everyone to RSVP :)
  • A Marriage license

I am sure there is more, but this wedding is pretty short and simple, so that is really almost everything. I can’t believe it is coming up so quickly, bit I couldn’t be more thrilled. I love him so much and cannot wait to be his wife.

US Travel: Southwest Airlines

image

Yay for extra room on an air plane. It has been a few years since I have found myself on a less than full flight. It was kind of nice.

I love flying Southwest. Everyone gets two free checked bags, seating is first come first served, and rather than fighting a mosh pit crowd to board the plane, passengers are given a boarding position (either A, B, or C and a number 1 through 60). I’m pretty happy with this system and since I always check in 24 hours in advance (exactly 24 hours in advance) I generally get a good boarding position.

On top of all this awesome-ness, Southwest earns massive points for free snacks, drinks and more legroom than the other airlines. And did you know they are going green? A long-time Eco-friendly company,  Southwest is now taking things a step further with their new ”Evolve” interior. This design is Eco friendly, cost effective, and emphisizes personal comfort. The seats will feature a fixed wing headrest and a lumbar cushion.

Um…I’m excited.

Oh, and Southwest’s Rapid Rewards Program has NO blackout dates. I love this airline.

Just got home and I am exhausted. Can’t wait to catch you up on the trip tomorrow. The wedding page is about to explode.

Night!

US Travels: PA Vacation in 10 days…

image

If you don’t include today (which I don’t), Mark and I will be starting our next vacation in 10 days. Woo hoo!

As stressful as this particular vacation is bound to be…what with all the wedding planning and such…I am still so excited. I am in desperate need of an escape from Los Angeles.

Aside from that, I get to see my Mother and my wonderful family to be. I even made a pretty great friend or two on last year’s trip to PA and I cannot wait to hang out with them again, as well.

Central City, PA is really quite lovely. It is a small town a couple of hours outside off Pittsburgh, set up in the mountains. There is clean air, blue skies and plenty of stars at night.

The picture above is actually the view of Johnstown, PA from the inclined plane, and is a possible wedding venue.

Can’t wait to head out of town. I will keep you posted! :)

The Digital Nomad: A New Career

I’m sick today…

Sort of. I made a mistake with my medication today and tasks like driving, or carrying heavy trays or spending any substantial time in a kitchen seemed scary.

It has been hours and I’m still actually pretty shaky and exhausted. But the kind of exhausted where you can’t sleep.

Yuck.

But there is good news (by the way, I just tried to spell news “Noose” and it took me a second to realize….wow…I really am sick)! So, good news…I think I figured out what I want to do with the rest of my life.

To be honest, I’m not really sure why it took me so long to realize it.

  • This is something I have ALWAYS loved doing.
  • It is something that I can do from anywhere.
  • I will be able to work from home most of the time.
  • I can do this while traveling.
  • Once I have children, I will be able to spend plenty of time at home raising them.
  • It is a profession that will always be needed, and by the way I choose to set my prices, I can get more work.

I want to be a photographer.

I LOVE taking photos and always have. This realization that it would be a great job for me sort of dawned on me slowly, and I think I have my upcoming wedding to thank for this.

While compiling lists of things to do when we go to Pennsylvania to plan the wedding (in like ten days) we started looking at photographers.

Holy cow are they expensive!

Too expensive and many of whom are not really that incredible. I have always been a bit of a photography snob…but I have seen high school students take better photos then some of the people out there doing this professionally.

So, I am going back to school this fall.

I am going to register to take classes at LACC. It is just down the street from my apartment and they have a good photography program. I am going to apply tomorrow and get my financial aid paperwork straightened out so I can start in August.

I am so excited about this choice. It has been a long time coming. And it is such an obvious choice.

When I was in high school, I placed in a state photo contest a few years in a row, and I have taken over 1000 photos on my phone since November. I take pictures everywhere I go.

This is how I see the world. Why not make this hobby my new career?

These are all just a few photos that I have taken with my cell phone.

Imagine what I can do with a good camera and an education.

So excited.

Now…back to the couch and the camomile tea I just made. Meh.

Our Wedding: Engagement Photos

Yup. It is happening. We are finally getting our engagement photos shot. We have been wanting to do this for a while, and we just never could get it to come together. The best part is that we having them done by my friend Steven of Steven C. De La Cruz Photography.

I am very excited. Mark and I have never had professional photos taken together before. We have a lot of great uses for them already, too. Save the dates, the website, our guest book, and we can bring them to Pennsylvania in two weeks when we head east to plan the wedding.

We are having them taken on Monday in a whimsical park by Steven’s house….and they are going to be themed photos. It is a little odd, but Mark and I are a little odd. The theme or rather, inspiration for the shoot is something that means a lot to both of us. They will be a perfect reflection of the two of us as a couple.

This is a peak at some of his other work.

So excited to see how they turn out!

Our Wedding: The Proposal Story

WonderCon: Day 1 – The Couple and the TARDIS

WonderCon: Day 2 – It’s Easy being Green

WonderCon: Day 3 – A Very Nerdy Birthday

Alright. So here it is. The story of how we became engaged.

The weekend of March 16th to the 18th a couple of our closest friends accompanied Mark and I to WonderCon, a pop culture/comic book convention in Anaheim.

It was my birthday weekend, and Mark and I couldn’t pass up the chance to head to another one of those “nerd” conventions. It is just our style. The entire weekend, Mark had planned to propose, but one factor or another kept preventing his grandiose plans from coming to fruition.

On the last day of the convention and my birthday, our friends, Mark and I headed back home, sad the trip was over, and both of us feeling anxious. When we returned home, Mark took me out to a delicious birthday dinner at “Baby Blues Barbeque.” We started with Fried Green Tomatoes…my favorite.

After the meal, we grabbed a bottle of wine, and headed back home to toast my birthday before heading out to meet up with some friends.

Mark asked me to light the candle on the coffee table (a star wars lightsaber candlestick holder from thinkgeek.com, with a long red taper candle that I had given him for Valentine’s day) and AFTER I lit the candle, Mark pointed out something was on the candlestick. I looked closer and noticed the gorgeous ring was waiting for me around the red candle.

I took it off (without blowing the candle out) and turned around. Mark was down on one knee. He took my hand and asked, “Sam, will you marry me?”

I told him that I was going to cry, and he burst out, “well, don’t say no!” I started laughing as I said yes, and wrapped my arms around him. We finished our glasses of wine, while talking about the future and laughing. I was so happy I was shaking.

We went out to celebrate our engagement and my birthday with good friends at Barney’s Beanery, the place where we first met.

The Very Unique Engagement Ring:

My ring is not a diamond (which I am not a fan of) but instead is the very stunning Moissanite. Moissanite is a rare, naturally-occurring gemstone that is typically found in small quantities in meteorites, corundum deposits, and kimberlite.

So basically, my stunning rock came from space (how very appropriate for a Star Wars Proposal). I love it , but not nearly as much as I love the man who gave it to me.
